Inaugural Durham Flower festival Launched

East Durham College are proud to announce the launch of a brand new exciting event for the region, the Durham Flower Festival 2014. Set over two days in August, Saturday 30th and Sunday 31st, the College’s Houghall Campus will play host to a large flower show, with further events being held at iconic Durham venues including Durham Cathedral and Crook Hall and Gardens. The Flower Show, which will be based in the grounds of the Houghall Campus, will see a wide range of amateur competitions take place over the two days. Competition categories include many breeds of fauna and flora, fruit and veg, food and art. There will also be a number of separate competition categories for trade displays – plus a number of trade stalls selling a variety of craft and gardening product. East Durham College events coordinator and Durham Flower Festival Show secretary, Dianne Weir, said: “This is an incredibly exciting event to be working on and we are so pleased to be hosting a large flower show for the region at our Houghall Campus. “Since the decision was taken by Gateshead Council to stop running the Gateshead Flower Show we have been determined to set up a new flower show for the region. “From talking to various horticultural and floral societies and people in the trade there is certainly an audience out there for this type of event and it’s being really well supported. “We are sure it will be a massive success and eventually grow into a nationally renowned horticultural and floral event.” Durham Cathedral will be hosting a local producers’ market giving visitors the opportunity to purchase local produce and artisan goods in the unique setting of the Cathedral Cloister. All visitors to the Flower Show will also receive a 10% discount in the Cathedral Shop for the duration of the Festival on production of a valid admission ticket. Events at Crook Hall and Gardens will include a number of local businesses setting up market stalls, artists painting in the garden and they will be putting together a special Durham Flower Festival menu which will include local produce from around the region and Crook Hall’s gardens. Nicola Sutcliffe, General Manager at Crook Hall and Gardens, said: “We are so happy to be taking part in this year’s Durham Flower Festival. We hope this is something we can put in our calendars every year from now on. Working alongside such great local food producers is going to be an honour.” The Durham Flower Festival will take place across the weekend of Saturday 30th and Sunday 31st August 2014, running from 10.30am till 5.00pm each day.
